Many Deceptions With Internet Marketing
How come internet marketing overwhelmed with impostors and phonies? One obvious thing is the anonymity of the internet. Also, it is so easy to get on the web these days. The one thing that prevents most people from doing anything wrong is the fear of being caught. For the others, the internet is a way to vent hatred and cruelty.
For example, a man who would never steal an old lady’s purse on the street may think nothing of emptying her bank account using a phishing scam. Many of these charlatans justify their actions by blaming the victim: Well, she was stupid enough to give me her information!
Also, fraudulent artists prowl on the internet because of the relative ease. It’s not very hard to think of something to trick people into believing you. In fact, it has been noted that even the most obvious email scams, a person wouldn’t even be required to know English very well. It takes subtle things that look official, such as verifiable email address, to effectively trick people into giving money.
Many scams are perpetrated through a simple copy-and-paste technique. The scammer receives a legitimate email from an entity - say, eBay for example. He or she copies the email, makes a few changes to the code (tricks which can be learned through simple internet searches), and sends it out. Unknowing recipient respond to what looks like a real email from a real entity, and the scam artist has what he wanted.
The last reason internet marketing is littered with charlatans and scam artists is because it’s cheap! You can get an email address for free, and no one verifies the name you use to sign up. You can host a website for only a few dollars, and as we mentioned above, it doesn’t take much to build that site in replica of legitimate sites, thus making yourself seem official.
Unlike the false websites or emails, real companies actually use cost-benefit analysis to determine if it is actually worth it to send mass emails like the ones that scammers send. It would need to make more money than is being used to send out the email. In retrospect, scammers don’t have to do this because of the fact that they are using a free service to send emails. In fact, there are also programs that can be bought cheap that will help to send out mass emails and make it easier to distribute the scam emails.
Since a bunch of emails can be sent in a short time, practically for free, it only takes about one percent of people to respond to the false emails for the scammer to make money. Problems have arisen within real companies because people have become so used to these scam emails that they won’t even glance at the legitimate emails from their company.
Marketing scams have cluttered the whole genre of internet marketing making it very difficult to determine whats verifiable. Some time and an internet connection can be enough for scammers to get want they want because the act of scamming requires not much money, not much talent, and no real knowledge.
