What Are The Disadvantages of Outsourcing, Part 2

by Linda P. Morton

Are you considering outsourcing jobs for your business? Then you must know the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing. Part 1 of this two-part article series covered the first three disadvantages of outsourcing. Part 2 covers four more.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 4: You May Not Get The Support You Need From An Outsource Vendor

One major disadvantage of outsourcing is the inability to contact vendors for support after you have paid them and a job has been closed. Usually you are limited to attempting to contact vendors though the outsource service site, but most vendors don’t check their messages on a job after it is completed.

Either way, it’s difficult to get prompt follow-up service if you can get it at all.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 5: Some Outsource Vendors May Abuse Your Trust

You usually know little about outsource vendors beyond their reviews. Plus, cultures differ across borders. So what is considered unethical or illegal in the USA may be considered acceptable in other countries. This sometimes may result in an outsource vendor stealing your intellectual property, competing with you, and grabbing the your customers.

You also need to be aware that allowing a vendor into the code for your site can destroy it. Sometimes the vendor legitimately needs the code in order to complete your job, but you have no guarantee that the vendor will respect your property.

All outsource jobs do not end in mutually beneficial relationships. Sometimes the vendor doesn’t perform as specified and you have to cancel the contract or put it into arbitration. Are you comfortable having someone whose angry with you having access to your site administration?

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 6: You May Become Overdependent On Outsourcing

If you need a particular type of job done frequently, you need to hire an employee who can do the job or train one with the necessary skills. Relying on outsourcers instead can keep you and your staff from developing skills needed to advance and grow your business.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 7: Outsource Relationships Are Short-Term

When you do find a good vendor that you want to use again, it’s difficult to develop a long-term relationship because outsource vendors move from job to job.

You may specify that you want the vendor to bid on another job. But if the vendor has a full work schedule, he won’t be able to fit your job in. So you’ll have to select another vendor or delay your job until the vendor is free.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing: Synthesis

Deciding to outsource or not to outsource is an important decision for your business and one that you should not take lightly. Do your homework and make your decision with the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing in mind.

You need to consider the disadvantages of outsourcing before deciding to turn any portion of your business over to strangers.
